What is CNC machining?
CNC machining
is a subtractive manufacturing process that comprises of the removal of material from a solid block using high-speed, precision machines. The raw block, or workpiece, is mounted on a table beneath the cutting tool. A computer control system directs the cutting tool to remove material systematically from the workpiece, shaping it into the desired final product.
How Does
CNC machining
Work?
CNC machining
works by firstly translating a CAD (computer-aided design) or CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) model into instructions that can be processed by a machine control unit (MCU). The MCU then drives the movements of the cutting tool and workpiece accordingly so as to achieve the required shape, finish, and tolerances. While 3-axis machining centers are commonly used for CNC milling operations, more complex geometries may require 4- or 5-axis capabilities in order to be produced accurately within tight tolerances. In addition to conventional milling operations such as end milling, face milling, pocketing, and contouring, today's CNC machines are also capable of performing more advanced operations such as thread milling, engraving, drilling, and tapping.
The Different Types of CNC Machines CNC milling machines are classified according to their number of axes as well as their primary function — horizontal or vertical orientation — as follows: · 3-Axis Machines: These are the most common type of CNC milling machine and are capable of performing a vast range of operations such as slotting, pocketing, drilling, tapping, contouring, and face milling. With a 3-axis machine, however, it is not possible to perform moreadvanced processes such as ball end milling or circular interpolation due to the limited number of axes at its disposal (the X-, Y-,and Z-axes). As a result, only simple prototypes or small batches can be produced using 3-axis machining centers. · 4-Axis Machines: As its name suggests, a 4-axis machine comes with an additional rotary axis that is perpendicular to the X-, Y-,and Z-axes (the A-axis). This extra degree of freedom allows for morecomplex geometries to be produced compared to what is possible with 3axismachines but at a higher cost. Hence, 4-axis machines are typically used for larger production runs where accuracy and repeatability are paramount considerations. · 5-Axis Machines: 5-axis machining centers come with 2 additional rotary axes — one parallel and one perpendicular to the X-,Y-,and Z -axes (the B -and A -axes respectively). Consequently , 5 -axis machines offer even greater flexibility when it comes toproducing parts with very intricate shapes . They are , however , much more expensive than both 3 -and 4 -axismachines . Hence , theyare usually found only in high -end production environments where batch sizes are large enough justify their purchase price .
